During Sudan's April 2023 civil war, RSF and allied militias conducted ethnically targeted mass killings of the Masalit in El Geneina — an estimated 10,000–15,000 dead, 570,000+ refugees in Chad. The US issued a genocide determination in January 2025.

Recognition status

Political / parliamentary. The US determined genocide in January 2025 (Blinken). HRW found ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity (May 2024). UN Panel found 10,000–15,000 killed in El Geneina. ICC continues Darfur investigations but has not charged genocide for 2023 violence. RSF denies all allegations.
