Bernie Sanders

US Senator (I-VT); the most prominent Jewish figure in US progressive politics

Fits a definition

Sanders affirms Israel’s “right to exist” in peace and security — satisfying a self-determination definition — yet pointedly does not center a “Zionist” identity and is a sharp critic of the Israeli government and the pro-Israel lobby.

What happened

Asked directly by Vox whether he views himself as a Zionist, Sanders declined the label and instead affirmed Israel’s right to exist plus Palestinian rights. In 2020 he became the first major presidential candidate to boycott AIPAC, citing its “platform for bigotry.”

A Zionist? What does that mean?… Do I think Israel has the right to exist? Yeah, I do. (Vox, 2015)

Under each definition

The clean divergence: self-ID “no,” self-determination “yes,” settler-colonial “contested,” religious “no.” He meets a substantive definition while refusing the identity.
Self-IDDo they call themselves a Zionist?
Not a Zionist

He declines the label and questions the word: “A Zionist? What does that mean?”

Self-determinationSupport a Jewish state?
A Zionist

He explicitly affirms Israel’s right to exist in peace and security.

Settler-colonialBacks the Jewish-state project?
Contested

He supports Israel’s continued existence (a two-state frame) while condemning occupation and settlements.

ReligiousA religious/return conception?
Not a Zionist

A secular Jew who links his Jewishness to social-justice values, not religious return.

The case that they're a Zionist

He explicitly affirms “Israel has the right to exist” in “peace and security” — the core of the self-determination definition — so a substantive lens classifies him as a Zionist even as he refuses the word.

The case against / their own view

He declines the label and questions the word; he is a leading congressional critic of Israeli policy, and grounds his Jewishness in social justice, not Israel-centrism.

In their words

In their own words
The Israeli people have the right to live in peace and security. So do the Palestinian people. I remain concerned about the platform AIPAC provides for leaders who express bigotry…

The verdicts above are how each definition would most likely classify this person — illustrative guidance, not official rulings. The lenses diverge most on the difference between a self-label and a substantive commitment, and between “Zionism” meaning a Jewish homeland versus a Jewish state. See the Definition tab for each definition’s full text. Inclusion is documentation, not a finding.
